False Golf Equivalence…
My first career choice was professional golf. The whole way through my secondary school education my whole focus was on doing that.
It didn’t work out!
And it resulted in me “ending up” in sales for which I’m eternally grateful. Here’s seven things I learned as a young guy trying to make it in professional golf that still stands true today.
in the bunker

in the trees

on the green
Don’t complain about the results you didn’t get from the work you didn’t do.
Work on your strengths as well as working on your weaknesses.
Practice in imperfect conditions, it’s likely your most important round could be in less that perfect conditions.
Play with people that are better than you if you want to get better.
Master your mind and inner voice. In a 4 1/2 hour round if golf you are only playing golf for 20 minutes. The other 4 hours and 10 mins is you talking to you and that’s where tournaments are won and lost.
Accept that even if you perform to your best there are always external elements that will affect the result. The picture below demonstrates the last point brilliantly. It’s the closest I got to a hole in one, given the slope on the green it’s almost impossible to comprehend how it didn’t go in. I hit the best shot I can but it’s on an imperfect surface which a dimpled ball that’s exposed to wind and rain.
Control the controllables, take accountability for the effort you put in and accept it won’t always ensure you win in the short term but overtime you will. #business #sales #founder #salesgeek
